Asian paraxylene prices gained US$21.67 a ton FOB Korea and CFR Taiwan/China in the third week of January.

Paraxylene price surged as crude oil prices jumped more than 10 per cent on 22nd January 2016. The spurt in oil prices also sent naphtha CFR Japan up US$19 a ton over the same period. Downstream demand was still not strong, thus paraxylene price rise was cost pushed.

Asian paraxylene prices fell US$20.83 a ton FOB Korea and CFR Taiwan/China in the first week of January.

Yisheng Petrochemical and ExxonMobil fixed their contract price at US$750 a ton. Isomer-grade mixed xylene inched were at US$614 a ton FOB Korea and US$642 a ton CFR Taiwan.

Paraxylene prices plunged in Asian markets tracking the rapidly weakening energy complex. Demand was also insipid but there was a slight recovery weekend on rise in mixed xylene cost.

January Asian contract price was also settled partially down.

Paraxylene prices slipped in Asian markets on the week, but were seen rising weekend as trading was quiet throughout the week. Long-term contract negotiations were heard ongoing.

In US, spot paraxylene fell week over week amid persistently quiet demand and tracking movement in Asia. Demand also remained quiet while production margins were still unfavorable.

Meanwhile, xylene market sentiment remained bearish despite supply on tight side and weak buy interest.

Paraxylene prices dipped back to below November end levels as crude oil markets sank.

In US, paraxylene spot followed Asia lower while activity remained slow in domestic market as production margins declined.

Spot paraxylene fell US$10 a ton FOB USG on the week.
