Yagi & Co introduces Cotton iD System for traceability of organic cotton

Yagi & Co has launched a new system called “Cotton iD” to improve the traceability of organic cotton. This system is designed to ensure that organic cotton can be consistently traced from its origin in the field to the production of yarn. It does this by connecting various international certifications related to organic cotton production in India. India is the world’s largest producer of organic cotton.

One of the challenges in the organic cotton industry is that there are two different certifications, one for processes before ginning (separating seed and cotton from harvested cotton balls) and another for the ginning process itself. This has made it difficult to maintain consistent traceability. In the past, there have been instances of large-scale fraud related to organic cotton in India.

Yagi & Co’s Cotton iD system addresses these traceability challenges. It allows for transparent management of 85% or more of the organic cotton they handle, tracking it all the way from the cotton fields to the production of thread. The company, a member of the Global Organic Textile Standard since 2006, is one of Japan’s leading companies in terms of handling internationally certified organic cotton. They offer products under their “Unito Organic” brand, including yarn, textiles, and garments. Customers purchasing organic cotton from them can receive certifications of the management system’s authenticity.

The company actively supports the transition of cotton farmers in India to organic farming and are committed to sustainability efforts. As part of their sustainability framework, they provide support for the education of farmers’ children. Organic cotton plays a crucial role in their overall business.

Yamaya Orimono Co., Ltd. emphasizes the importance of traceability management in the textile industry, particularly in terms of transparency. They express their commitment to making their management system strong and secure, with the goal of delivering safer and more reliable organic cotton to countries around the world as part of their sustainable business efforts.
