World famous Bangladesh fashion designer to give a new look to Khadi in Rajasthan

To make Rajasthan khadi famous throughout the world, the present pattern needs to be diversified with modern colours and incorporate designs into it, said world famous Bangladesh-based fashion designer Bibi Russel during her stay in Jaisalmer. Russel had come to Rajasthan and visited Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Barmer on the request of chief minister Vasundhara Raje.

Russel has decided to work on khadi and with this objective she is on her India tour. Russel now wants to work with khadi weavers from the state. She met the khadi officials in Jaisalmer. Khadi Parishad’s Rajuram Prajapat showed her khadi shawls and other products during her visit.

She is working out plans to organize many fashion shows to promote khadi. In January 2015, a fashion show will be organized at Bangalore where along with traditional, modern designs will be included in khadi for which a three-month research campaign has started and she is back in India for this purpose.

Khadi has been part of state’s culture and the technique is also good. Keeping the textile traditional, it would have a modern and colourful makeover. Khadi will be made with the youth in mind so that craze among youngsters increase. Khadi products will be made to lure youth.

Russel said that lot of tourists, who come to Rajasthan seldom visit institutions selling khadi, which is sad. She would talk to the government in this regard.

To promote khadi, there is also need for online marketing . It should be propagated on social media and they will make efforts for it. Khadi will also be displayed at big textile shows organized at the national level so that people get attracted towards it.

Currently, the sale of khadi is negligible due to which the livelihood of weavers is at stake.
