The Walmart Foundation, which is connected to the Walmart retail chain, has given $1.2 million to two American non-profit organizations, Goodwill Industries International and Accelerating Circularity. This money will be used to help recycle unsellable textile donations that cannot be sold and promote a more sustainable way of using textiles.
The goal of this donation is to help local Goodwill organizations learn how to turn textile waste into something useful. Twenty-five neighborhood groups will use the money to figure out how to process these old textiles so they can be used again. They will also teach their staff how to do this.
Some local groups like Goodwill Industries of Tenneva Area, Goodwill of the Finger Lakes, Goodwill of the Ontario Great Lakes, and Goodwill Industries of West Michigan will be the leaders in this effort.
Brittany Dickinson, who works at Goodwill Industries International, says they want to find a way to recycle old textiles that cannot be worn anymore. They believe this is important to reduce waste.
Local Goodwill organizations are also testing out new centers where they can work together to recycle textiles. They hope this can be a model for other groups who want to do the same thing.
