VTT to develop energy-efficient fiber products

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-08-23 11:35:24 – Finland

The VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has announced a new initiative, the Energy First project, aimed at addressing energy and resource consumption challenges in the forestry and textile industries. This initiative focuses on developing low-carbon, energy-efficient, and recyclable fiber-based products using innovative technology.

As global e-commerce continues to expand, the demand for fiber-based packaging is expected to grow by 5-10% annually, according to Statista Market Insights and eMarketer. The Energy First project seeks to meet this growing demand by creating high-quality, easily recyclable packaging while significantly reducing its carbon footprint. In the non-woven sector, a shift from plastic-based products to cellulose alternatives is anticipated, driven by VTT’s research.

"This initiative is a critical step towards more sustainable fiber-based products. With more than 50 industrial partners, we are paving the way for energy-efficient paper board production, driving innovation towards a sustainable future," said Atte Virtanen, Vice President of Biomaterial Processing and Products at VTT.

The products developed through this initiative are designed to be compatible with existing recycling systems, making them a sustainable alternative to reusable packaging. Additionally, the initiative aligns with the EU’s upcoming packaging directives, which emphasize sustainable, recyclable bio-based solutions.
