USA probes Jokey on human rights violation

The top apparel brand watchdog has launched an investigation into the lingerie brand Jockey concerning human rights violations. They have been allegations of violation and abusive practices at one of the factories.

The investigation has been launched by WRAP ( Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production ) after Norway’s trillion sovereign wealth fund dropped Page from its investment portfolio due to human rights violation concerns at Unit 3.

Page has denied these allegations and has dismissed the verbal abuse and intimidation against employees. They continued to state that they had enough evidence to prove the allegations were falsely raised. The shares in the page industry fall by 3.2% on India’s National Stock Exchange on Wednesday.  WRAP’s spokesman Seth Lennon stated that such violations could result in the factory losing their certification.

He further added that if the factories remedial efforts prove to be insufficient, WRAP is prepared to revoke the facility’s certification. WRAP is known to make their certification decisions on a facility-by-facility basis and it investigates matters based on credible concerns.

The Page site under the investigative scanner is a certified till November 15th. WRAP may conduct investigations on other manufacturing sites as well. The certification is keenly pursued by garment manufacturers in countries including India, Bangladesh, China and Vietnam, as it provides security to international apparel brands that the factories adhere to ethical and safety standards.

The Unit 3 factory in Bangalore employee over 1000 workers and produces around $400 million in revenue annually. Page has requested a meeting and the Council on Ethics has accepted their approach and is likely to conduct the meeting in the near future.
