Unlock Programme drives sustainable cotton production

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-09-26 16:40:15 – France

The fashion industry has introduced the Unlock Programme, an ambitious initiative developed by The Fashion Pact and sustainability consultancy 2050, aimed at incentivizing sustainable cotton production. This programme marks a significant move towards collaborative efforts in reducing supply chain emissions.

The Unlock Programme offers financial incentives to farmers who adopt lower-impact and regenerative farming practices. Early results from the pilot phase indicate significant carbon reductions in cotton production across India and the USA.

Eva von Alvensleben, Executive Director of The Fashion Pact, highlighted the urgency of the initiative: "Demand for low-climate-impact raw materials could exceed supply by 133 million tons by 2030, underscoring the need to invest in Tier 4 to secure sustainable materials."

The programme measures the greenhouse gas impacts of farming practice changes and issues "Unlock Units" to farmers based on their emissions reductions. Participating brands can purchase these units, channeling investment directly to farmers and potentially using these claims in their Scope 3 inventories.

Laila Petrie, Director General of Future Earth Lab, emphasized the programme’s goals: "Unlock was designed to push the boundaries of sustainable practices with the fashion industry's support. Our aim is to make these solutions accessible to farmers worldwide."

Funded in part by the Laudes Foundation, the initiative has attracted 25 brands in its pilot phase, including J.Crew Group and House of Baukjen. The programme plans to enrol up to 90,000 farmers in the coming years and expand beyond the USA and India.
