The agroforestry platform Treedom and the supply chain sustainability data company Sedex have joined forces to assist the global capture of 31 tons of CO2 over a ten-year period through tree planting.
Sedex says that joining Treedom is part of its new mission to become a leader in supply chain sustainability for social and environmental reasons. This is in addition to its plan to create more efficient data tools, insights, and assessment solutions—including the SMETA audit—to support the supply chain ESG objectives of businesses. The business pointed out that it is also working on its own sustainability program at the same time.
The 2010-founded Treedom platform implements its projects in collaboration with socially conscious local organizations, such as farmers' cooperatives or non-governmental organizations (NGOs), in order to plant the right trees for the people and biodiversity of a region. For transparency about all of its forests, the platform provides freely accessible information on each tree's species, coordinates, a photo, and its estimated CO2 absorption for its first ten years.
200 geolocated trees from Cameroon, Madagascar, Tanzania, and other countries are part of Sedex's Treedom forest. In ten years, these trees are expected to capture 31 tons of CO2. The positive effects are not only beneficial to the environment but also to society as a whole. For instance, cacao trees in Cameroon provide additional income.
Maurizio Capuzzo, the chief marketing officer at Sedex, said: “Our commitment to driving social and environmental progress is unwavering. At Sedex, we firmly believe that actions speak louder than words. By partnering with Treedom, we’re excited to leverage their intelligent platform and tap into a wider network to scale our impact. This collaboration presents a fantastic opportunity for Sedex to contribute to projects that capture CO2, foster ecosystem diversity, and support local communities. We look forward to seeing our forest flourish with our valued customers, partners, and dedicated Sedex teams’ support.”
Business development manager at Treedom, Vanina Ricci, added: “We are incredibly excited to partner with Sedex, who are doing many wonderful things to be a leading sustainable business in their sector. I’m proud that Treedom now forms a part of their ESG strategy. I can’t wait to see how this partnership develops over time.”
At the Sustainable Apparel and Textiles Conference USA event in New York, Sedex will introduce its Treedom forest. The business intends to construct its forest throughout 2023.
