Toray Industries, Inc. announced that starting this April, it will implement the mass balance approach in manufacturing its TORAYLON™ acrylic staple fiber. This method attributes properties from both biomass and plastic waste, contributing to sustainability. The company has already secured ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) PLUS certification for this initiative.

As part of its strategy to expand in high-growth areas, Toray focuses on developing advanced, eco-friendly textiles. While the company has successfully integrated recycled and bio-based materials into nylon and polyester fibers, acrylic fibers have posed challenges due to the lack of available waste resources. The mass balance approach will now allow Toray to produce environmentally conscious, high-performance TORAYLON™ fibers.

Toray will work with supply chain partners to verify life cycle assessments and seek approval for inclusion in the Higg Index, a key sustainability measurement tool for the textile industry.
