TMC urges industry action to address fibre fragmentation

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-10-07 17:10:56 – United Kingdom

The Microfibre Consortium (TMC) has outlined its ongoing efforts to combat fibre shedding from textiles, often called microfibre pollution, but emphasizes that consistent, widespread action from the industry is essential.

TMC's CEO, Kelly Sheridan, says the organization's latest report provides a detailed update on the progress made in tackling fibre shedding, a complex and pressing issue. However, she adds that more work is required.

The report, titled "The Microfibre 2030 Commitment: An Update on Progress", covers developments made between June 2022 and June 2024. It highlights the global efforts aimed at reducing the environmental damage caused by fibre shedding, with a goal to eliminate its impact by 2030.

One of the key actions mentioned in the report is the formation of TMC's Policy Committee, which aims to offer expert guidance on initiatives like the European Union’s Product Environmental Footprint.

Additionally, TMC is helping manufacturers reduce fibre shedding in wastewater by creating the Fabric Shedding Rate (FSR) indicator. This tool will enable brands and retailers to take action based on reliable test results.

TMC is also reviewing its testing methods to improve understanding of how fibres enter the environment. To support this work, they launched version 2.0 of the Microfibre Data Portal, which will allow for broader testing and more in-depth analysis.
