The Millennial shoppers who gave steam to Fashion Revolution and other anti-fast-fashion movements are growing up—and using the same consumer ethics when purchasing clothes for their little ones.
The demand for organic and sustainably made baby clothing is stronger than ever— and you don’t have to be an avid researcher to make the right choices. Start with brands certified by the The Global Organic Textile Standard (to ensure the company meets ecological and social criteria in the manufacturing of its textiles). Even more important than knowing that your baby’s onesies were made under eco-friendly and humane conditions is knowing that the organic cotton is made without chemicals, pesticides and flame retardants. And with up to 20% of all infants experiencing eczema, you may want to look for companies certified by OEKO-TEX Standard 100, to further ensure the fabric protects against skin irritation. Overall, both certifications are good news for your baby’s sensitive skin—and the planet.
Here are organic brands that celebrate slow fashion and sweet designs with safe fabrics.
Touched by Nature Fun Guy 3-Pack
The cute and clever designs made this onesie pack an instant add-on to my cart. The company uses 100% cotton—and just like the adorable vegetables that adorn these bodysuits, these clothes were made without the use of fertilizers and pesticides. If your baby is craving more vegetables (in his or her wardrobe), check out these matching bibs.
Parade Organics Signature Print Romper
This company was a pioneer in manufacturing baby clothing with certified organic and sustainable materials. Even their prints, like this romper in Summer Trees, are made with eco-friendly inks that are hand-pressed by real people. The two-way zippers and snaps make for easy dressing (these features are a godsend once she learns how to start crawling away!)
Monica + Andy Limited Edition Summer Prints
A mixtape-themed PJ turned out to be too cool to wear just to bedtime—so they have made an appearance at my son’s music class and Mozart for Munchkins. Each season, this brand unveils limited-edition prints and the ones for summer include Lemonade Stand and Flamingo Floatie. My favorite? This Grill Master BBQ Baby Bundle. All Monica + Andy clothing is GOTS-certified.
Roux
You don’t know the meaning of cute until you’ve dressed your baby in Miro Harem Pants (Made in the USA) or a Roux tie-dyed romper. From all the quirky items made for your little flower child, I went for the Mavi Romper in eggplant blue. With an easy snap closure and a wide crew neck, this romper is something a child can wear for months.
Burt’s Bees One-Piece Long-Sleeve Jumpsuits
If you’re traveling with your baby, you may want to purchase a couple of these long-sleeve jumpsuits just in case the summer nights or airplane get chilly. The 100% breathable cotton will keep a child safe from overheating in case the weather shifts unexpectedly. From Blossom Peony to Eggshell Watercolor Chevron, these prints will make you question whether your own wardrobe is tapping its full potential. The great thing about stylish one-pieces is they are space savers for whenever you pack the diaper bag for your family’s next adventure. These tend to run tight so order a size up if your little one grows as fast as mine. Burt’s Bees is also GOTS-certified, including its burping cloths.
DorDor & GorGor Elephant Imprints
True confession: I love elephants—and I hope my son grows to respect and appreciate all animals and wildlife when he grows up. These onesies are designed with natural dyes extracted from plants, flowers, leaves or fruits. The GOTS-certified pieces are 100% cotton, hypoallergenic and its manufacturing practices follow the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Primary Rainbow Rash Guard
When you first start shopping for your baby, you might find it tempting to load up on every onesie with a clever slogan or cute critter. But Primary is all about creating functional, high-quality clothing in solid colors. From petal to slate blue and all the gender-neutral colors in between, think of these as your baby’s wardrobe staples. While Primary focuses on solids, it does have simple rainbow and pin dot patterns. Even their rainbow rash guards are certified by OEKO-Tex Standard 100.
Gap Baby Organic Tank Shorty
This oceanic one piece in Fresh Water stripes as well as this earthy onesie tank with an allover giraffe print are just some of the pieces in Gap’s organic collection for babies. All are made with organic and ultrasoft cotton—and all are proof that even large retail chains can make strides toward sustainable fashion.
H&M Conscious Cotton Bib Overalls
H&M is making an effort, too, with its Conscious collection. These sweatshirt fabric overalls (95% cotton and 5% elastane) come in a multitude of colors including gender-neutrals. The kangaroo pocket is the perfect touch. Style with a baby bodysuit (100% cotton) and your baby is all set for a day in style. These run on the large side.
Kid Wild Organic Kimono
The great thing about tie-kimono tops is flexible sizing. While most baby clothing is designed to fit a baby for one to three months at a time, most of Kid Wild’s clothing can fit your baby for up to 6 months. I bought this Organic Kimono in Vanilla back in February and it remains in the nursery drawer, and will likely continue to fit my son for a few more months.
