The Aditya Birla Group‘s Thai Acrylic Fibre Co Ltd (TAF) has created a digital traceability platform for its flagship fiber brand Radianza. The blockchain-based technology, developed by Canada-based Licof, will provide complete transparency and traceability of Radianza fiber in finished garments for brands, retailers, and consumers.
Radianza fiber, which employs cutting-edge gel-dyeing technology, was recently named the first and only acrylic fiber to get Material Sustainability Index (MSI) Scores from Higg Co, based on a Thinkstep Life Cycle Assessment Impact research (now Sphera).
TAF was the first and only acrylic fiber business to join the Bluesign System earlier this year. According to a press statement, the traceability platform will help the company’s leading position in sustainability in textiles.
Tuhin Kulshreshtha, TAF’s head of marketing for value-added products, said that brands and retailers are attempting to increase transparency in their value chains by creating capabilities to track and trace raw materials from source to end-product. This is especially true for materials that claim to be environmentally friendly. Now that their customers are developing end-products with Radianza that have a higher sustainability index, it was the right time for them to introduce the digital platform that allows customers to easily trace the fiber throughout the value chain.
Ritesh Khare, founder of Licof said that blockchain is a very powerful technology, especially for those at the end of the value chain like brands and retailers to validate the authenticity of the materials they are sourcing in a complex value chain like textile and apparel. A user-friendly platform makes it very easy for value chain stakeholders to cooperate and share essential information, while blockchain makes digital tracing and tracking irreversible. They’re thrilled to work with TAF and help them and their clients track down Radianza and other specialty fibers.”
TAF will collaborate with its value chain partners to ensure that the platform is implemented across the board.
