Since 1994, the Spanish brand Ternua has committed to promoting the usage of environmentally friendly materials, fillings, and treatments for its technical outdoor apparel. In all these years it has carried out many projects to promote sustainable models and a circular economy.
Ternua is led by values like Craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation. They used fleeces made from recycled plastic bottles for their first collection and in 2015 it also won ISPO AWARD Gold for their Terranova and South River jackets with recycled feather fill. In Europe, it was the first one to remove toxic chemical substances (PFCs) for water-repellent treatment of its garments in 2016. Presently, it practices recycling of materials like cotton, feathers, coffee grounds, fishing nets, PET plastic, plastic waste from the sea, walnut shells, wool, railroad carpets, or discarded textiles.
The brand is very close to nature and the brand story is also inspired by Basque adventurers from earlier times who traveled to Newfoundland. It aims to produce conscious outdoor clothing for adventure seekers while protecting the environment as well. The brand is a pioneer in designing and executing such environment-friendly circular economy projects.
They are also intended to be a call to action – both for local businesses in the Basque Country and for the global outdoor industry. Redcycle was the first project by the brand. It collected 12 tonnes of abandoned fishing nets in the Cantabrian Sea. Three years later, the brand completed its next circular economy project called Nutcycle. As part of this initiative, Ternua collected 500 kg of walnut shells from cider houses in Guipuzcoa, Basque Country. Likewise, the company has a forward mind to bring on more exciting projects and reduce waste from our environment.
