Teijin Frontier Co., Ltd. has globally launched BIOFRONT, an innovative polylactic acid (PLA) resin that biodegrades faster in oceans, rivers, and soil than conventional PLA products. Enhanced with a unique biodegradation accelerator, BIOFRONT maintains its strength, crystallinity, and moldability while significantly increasing its decomposition rate.
BIOFRONT PLA resin stands out for its accelerated breakdown in natural environments, including marine, riverine, and soil conditions, where fewer bacteria and fungi are present compared to composting systems. The resin’s decomposition rate can be adjusted to match desired product lifespans, as the loading parameters of the accelerator can be finely tuned. This advancement makes BIOFRONT suitable for applications that typically rely on conventional PLA, including films, injection-molded, extruded products, and textile fibers, without compromising quality.
From a sustainability perspective, BIOFRONT contributes to reducing microplastic pollution due to its faster biodegradation and lowers CO2 emissions since it is derived from plant-based materials. As Teijin Frontier continues to expand its eco-friendly offerings, BIOFRONT PLA resin represents a key step in minimizing plastic’s environmental footprint, supporting a transition to more biodegradable materials in various industries.
