Technikum Laubholz launches pilot plant for wood-based carbon fiber

Technikum Laubholz, based in Göppingen, Germany, has inaugurated its pilot plant for producing wood-based carbon fiber (WDBSD CF), utilizing renewable hardwoods from sustainably managed regional forests. This innovative approach aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and minimize environmental impact while delivering high-performance fiber for industrial applications.

Dr. Rolf Moors, head of fiber-based biopolymer materials at Technikum Laubholz, emphasizes that WDBSD CF technology reduces energy consumption during production and offers excellent mechanical properties like thermal resistance, electrical conductivity, and mechanical strength. These qualities make it ideal for applications ranging from sports equipment and musical instruments to lightweight aerospace components and energy storage systems.

Erna Nawrath, a fiber development specialist, highlights that WDBSD CF provides a sustainable alternative to conventional carbon fibers, maintaining high strength and low weight while lessening the ecological footprint.

CEO Dr. Ing. Tobias Wolfinger notes that this new technology addresses current demands for resource efficiency, independence from global supply chains, and the substitution of fossil-based materials, particularly in mobility where it can help reduce vehicle weight and energy consumption.
