Sweden-based Ikea joins CanopyStyle initiative

Canopy and IKEA announce their partnership in the fight against supply chain transformation and the use of viscose derived from Ancient and Endangered Trees.

IKEA is maintaining its dedication to the world’s forests by joining the CanopyStyle program and buying viscose for home textiles solely from suppliers who have received the top score in Canopy’s Hot Button Report. The first significant merchant to join CanopyStyle is IKEA, which specializes in home furnishings and textiles.

It is not necessary to produce materials like rayon and viscose for clothing and home furnishings from the world’s Ancient and Endangered Forests. The majority of land-based species on the planet are found in these crucial forest ecosystems, which are also very effective at trapping and storing carbon. Leading scientists have recognized forests as a key component of the fight against climate change and biodiversity catastrophe.

Lena Bischoff, Material & Innovation Area Manager, Inter IKEA Group, said that as the demand on the world’s forests increases, IKEA is driven by its forest agenda and wants to step up its efforts to further preserve biodiversity, reduce climate change, and spur innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. They are pleased to work closely with Canopy and all of the stores united through this project in this endeavor. The home textiles industry needs to step up and make sure that the textiles made from trees, such viscose and lyocell, only originate from responsibly managed forests, and move toward lower-impact alternatives.

Nicole Rycroft, executive director of Canopy, said that they are happy to have the globally renowned brand IKEA join Canopy and commit to forest protection as part of their textile purchasing methods. Their partnership with IKEA ushers in a new era for the procurement of viscose for home goods and furnishings from lower-carbon and forest-friendly sources. With critical forests kept out of the supply and Next Gen alternatives scaled in our bed sheets and beyond, it will make it possible for all of us to sleep more peacefully.
