Sustainea and Primient to launch bio-MEG plant in Indiana

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-10-08 16:35:19 – USA

Sustainea and Primient have announced a co-location partnership that will supply corn dextrose from Primient’s facility in Lafayette, Indiana, to Sustainea’s upcoming Bio-MEG (monoethylene glycol) plant. Sustainea's facility, which represents an investment of around $400 million, will produce a renewable, plant-based alternative to petroleum-based MEG.

Sustainea aims to become a global leader in Bio-MEG, a product that can replace traditional MEG with a lower carbon footprint while maintaining high quality and functionality. Primient, a leading producer of plant-based ingredients, will supply low-carbon dextrose to the Bio-MEG plant, helping reduce the demand for fossil-based plastics. The plant will produce sustainable bioproducts for industries such as beverages, food packaging, apparel, and footwear.

Sustainea’s CEO, Gustavo Sergi, emphasized that this partnership is a major step toward creating one of the largest global sustainability ventures. He praised Primient for being a long-term partner with aligned values and operational synergies. Sergi highlighted that the high energy efficiency and low-carbon dextrose from Primient’s Lafayette plant would strengthen Sustainea’s position in both sustainability and competitiveness. This collaboration will benefit customers by supporting the decarbonization of the growing PET (polyethylene terephthalate) market.

With strong support from the state of Indiana and the city of Lafayette, the agreement was influenced by the region’s well-developed infrastructure, transportation networks, and favorable local policies. Engineering work and final investment decisions will be completed before construction begins, with production expected to start in 2028.
