Ecco has successfully created a prototype shoe using fiber from the Respin pilot line, produced with Spinnova’s technology. A product featuring this fiber is expected to be released before the end of the first quarter of 2025.

I am proud of the progress we have made with Respin’s fiber quality, which now meets commercial standards and showcases the versatility of Spinnova’s technology, capable of using various feedstocks, including leather waste,” said Tuomas Oijala, Spinnova’s CEO. “We now have a clear plan with Ecco for the next steps to scale leather waste-based fiber production.”

Given the significant opportunities to scale Respin’s production to a commercial level, the Finnish fiber firm and premium shoe brand have signed a letter of intent (LOI) outlining their future plans. Both parties are committed to expanding operations and making a final decision on Respin’s production scaling and commercialization.

In line with Spinnova’s strategy and the Respin joint venture agreement, Spinnova will serve as the technology provider for any production scale-up. Spinnova does not anticipate needing additional external financing to increase production capacity.

Spinnova’s 50/50 joint venture with Ecco and its leather partner, KT Trading, was established in May 2021 to create circular textiles from leather waste. Using Spinnova’s low-emission technology, the leather fiber boasts sustainability benefits, including renewable raw materials, zero harmful chemicals, and minimal water use.
