Seawool yarn sets new standard for eco-friendly fashion

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-06-28 15:40:03 – Japan

Seawool yarn, an innovative creation by Creative Tech Textile and Hans Global, embodies the concept of “Green Textile.” This environmentally friendly yarn is produced from oyster shells and post-consumer petrochemical materials, marking a new milestone in sustainable fashion. In 2023 alone, it has repurposed 100 tons of discarded oyster shells and 300 tons of plastic waste, significantly reducing environmental pollution.

To mitigate the harmful effects of dry cleaning, the R&D team has developed seawool/merino wool yarn for flatbed knits. This yarn retains the softness of Merino Wool while incorporating oyster shell properties for enhanced bacterial and odor control. Furthermore, seawool/merino wool sweaters are machine washable, eliminating the need for dry cleaning and its associated health risks.

Recognizing the importance of animal rights and water conservation, the companies have developed Smawarm® insulation. Traditional goose down collection is not only cruel but also water-intensive, using about 600 tons of water per ton of goose down. By utilizing the low conductivity of oyster shells, seawool fiber has been transformed into Smawarm® Insulation, which has already achieved a performance rating of 550 FP.
