Saree made of natural fibre paves its way steadily

The exhibition showcasing eco-friendly sarees made out of natural fibres, including plantain, sisal, white madar, sorrel stem and bamboo is being conducted with the aim of giving a rebirth to fabrics made of natural fibres.

Sarees made of plantain fibre will be the highlight of the exhibition. They are weaved by traditional weavers at Anaka Puthur Weavers’ Cooperative Society. The fibre is separated and at a cloth mill it is mixed with silk and cotton threads for reinforcement. Then, colouring is done by the traditional weavers and the saree is woven. Designs are created using natural plantain fibres, said Reena Mary, who is organizing this exhibition.

Customers can choose the colour combination they prefer. For durability, washing is preferred using detergent soaps in yellow colour.

While the banana-cotton sarees are priced at Rs 1,500 and above, the banana-silk variety can be bought at Rs 3,000 onwards.

The one-day exhibition will be held at Women’s Club, Kowdiar, in Trivandrum on Saturday. On August 25, a weaver who is engaged in making the fabric will be arriving at the exhibition and sales will be conducted where customers can place orders during Saturday’s exhibition.

This variety of sarees made from natural fiber is slowly making its way to the state, whereas, it has many takers abroad, especially in the UK and Canada.
