Sanuk launches 100% plant-based veg out collection

Sanuk®, a brand of Deckers Brands, announced the launch of its latest eco-conscious innovation: Veg Out. Only seven low-impact, plant-based, and recycled natural materials make up this 100% plant-based footwear capsule collection, which delivers a lighter step without sacrificing on style or comfort.

The new collection features two Sidewalk Surfer models with hemp cotton blend uppers, jute footbeds, and cork and natural rubber outsoles that are sure to keep you on solid ground. These laced styles use few ingredients but still deliver Sanuk’s renowned heavy dose of cushiony comfort, making them suitable for all-day wear. They have a natural look with undyed fibers, a deliberate choice to further reduce environmental impact when compared to conventional fabric dyeing and finishing processes.

With its previous “rubbish reincarnated” SustainaSole collection and use of Sugar Cane EVA in the Cozy Vibes collection, Sanuk, a company known for breaking ground in the sustainable footwear industry, is demonstrating that plant-based isn’t just for diets any longer and enticing consumers to embrace more sustainable products.

Sanuk is taking the Veg Out Collection a step further by evaluating the carbon emissions related to the product’s materials, in addition to choosing plant-based ingredients over synthetic ones. Low-impact materials were used in the collection, and the firm bought offsets to cover the negligible amount of carbon emissions that remained, making the collection’s product materials 100% carbon neutral.

Katie Pruitt, Director of Product at Sanuk, said that this line was developed to purposely push the boundaries of developing sustainable products through the sole usage of plant-based materials, which is rarely done in footwear. They’re happy to introduce this range as a result of the research and development in the material space, which forced us to consider manufacturing through a new perspective.

Below is the full vegan “shoe-trition” label for the Veg Out collection: Responsibly sourced cotton, Jute, Hemp, Cork, TENCEL™ Lyocell (Trees), Natural Rubber and Recycled PLA (Corn-Based).
