ThredUp, a fashion resale platform based in the United States, has partnered with LG Electronics USA, a subsidiary of South Korean electronics giant LG, to launch a charitable clothing clean-out program.
ThredUp will provide its Resale-as-a-Service (RaaS) to a non-fashion company for the first time as part of the partnership, which seeks to help customers prolong the life of their items while also teaching them about responsible clothing consumption.
Anyone in the United States can buy a ThredUp x LG Donation Clean Out Kit, which will be sent to them and filled with women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, and accessories. Alternatively, they can print a label and place the products in any shippable box.
Following the free shipping of the products to ThredUp, the two firms will contribute $5 to a charity of their choice. ThredUp will then resellable things on its marketplace, giving them a second life.
According to the company, the purchase would also help ThredUp to extend its RaaS client base, allowing businesses across industries to offer garment resale experiences to their customers.
Pooja Sethi, senior vice president and general manager of RaaS at ThredUp, said that any firm – not just fashion shops – can participate in garment resale using RaaS.
According to ThredUp’s 2021 Resale Report, the United States discards 36 billion pieces of clothing each year, 95 percent of which could be recycled or repurposed.
