Recyclable waste awareness
The second edition of Small Five’s annual fashion show took place at Sarafina Hall in Ikageng on Saturday, May 27, 2023, a non-profit organization that promotes tourism and the environment.
All of the clothing in the show is made from recyclable waste, according to the show’s chair, Otlotleng Sekhweta. “Our primary focus is to minimize waste in our community and the overall environment by cleaning and making people more aware of the environmental issues caused by waste materials,” he said.
Sekhweta continued by stressing the significance of beginning early waste management instruction for students. Approximately two months were given to students to plan and carry out their concepts, he noted. “We were delighted to see how learners allowed their creative juices to flow,” he said. The company is looking forward to hosting more events and encouraging learners from other places to participate.
“We aim to minimise pollution around Potchefstroom, support community development in conservation, cleaning, and sharing environmental information.” The J.B. Marks Municipality, the Department of Economic Development Environment, Conservation and Tourism, Petco, Ward 18 Councillor, and the Kagiso Lerefolo Foundation were specifically acknowledged by the NPO as having contributed to the success of the event. In 2017, the Small Five Environmental and Tourism Organisation was founded.
Sekhweta claims the inspiration struck after she saw a need for environmental education in the neighbourhood. “Besides the fashion show, we conduct awareness campaigns, conserve, and travel,” he said. “We hope to bring changes and motivate people to have an environmental perspective. Our biggest goal is to reduce pollution and conserve nature,” he concluded.
