ReBioCycle project to revolutionize bioplastic recycling

The four-year ReBioCycle project, launched in October, seeks to advance recycling technologies for bioplastics such as PLA and PHA with €7.5 million in funding from the European Union. The initiative involves 20 companies collaborating to develop new recycling solutions, covering mechanical, chemical, enzymatic, and microbial processes.

The project is led by University College Dublin and BiOrbic Bioeconomy SFI Research Centre, with contributions from European Bioplastics and members like Aimplas, Corbion, Kaneka, Novamont, Sulapac, and TotalEnergies.

These partners aim to create a European model for bioplastic upcycling, showcasing the potential of recycled polymers for higher-value applications. Jan Pels, CTO and MD of Torwash, highlighted the project’s goal to make recycling biodegradable plastics more accessible, thereby encouraging a broader shift towards sustainable materials.

According to Professor Kevin O’Connor, coordinator of the project, innovative recycling technologies will demonstrate that biobased biodegradable plastics can play a significant role in the circular bioeconomy.

European Bioplastics supports this initiative, advocating for an actionable EU Bioeconomy Strategy to strengthen Europe’s industries. Hasso von Pogrell, MD of European Bioplastics, emphasized the importance of policy support and technological advancements, viewing ReBioCycle as a model of effective collaboration for sustainable growth in bioplastic recycling.
