The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to establish the city’s first dedicated textile waste processing facility. According to officials, the initiative aims to manage the 100-125 tonnes of textile waste generated daily, which cannot be processed alongside regular solid waste.

Sandip Kadam, head of PMC's Solid Waste Management (SWM) department, emphasized that the unit will process textile waste in an eco-friendly manner, reducing harm to the environment. He noted that many people overlook the environmental consequences of textile waste.

Pune generates 1,200 to 1,300 tonnes of dry waste and 900 to 1,000 tonnes of wet waste daily. The PMC currently operates 12 biogas plants for wet waste and 13 for dry waste. Of the dry waste, 100 to 125 tonnes is composed of textile waste.

Officials estimate the cost of the textile waste processing unit to be between ₹3 to ₹4 crore (approximately US $350,000 to US $466,000). However, the final cost may vary depending on factors such as land availability and machinery requirements.
