In the United States, the Public Interest Advocacy Organisation is stressing over the government to prevent apparel companies from destroying unsold garments and excess materials. Through their “waste is out of fashion” campaign, they want to ban the practice of disposing of overstock clothing and landfilling of other textiles.
The Denver- Colorado-based US Public Interest Research Group USPIRG is getting highly agitated over the clothing companies for incinerating and sending overstock & unused clothing to landfills for bringing their new collections and creating tremendous pollution. Now the fashion industry is becoming the fastest growing waste stream. Apparel companies do a lot of fraud activities to hide their overstock wastes in order to not gain the customer’s attention
USPIRG, in one of its reports, asserts that Nike also for its reports by calling the disposal of unsold goods as ‘energy recovery’ or ‘waste to energy’. It also revealed that Burberry destroyed its $36.8 million worth of unsold products in 2018 though now the brand has pledged to stop burning its unsold goods. USPIRG highly stresses over the lawmakers to actively hold charges against the brands for overproduction and destruction of the unused.
It wants the government to ensure that no more pollution is created by the burning of the textile mountains. It also says that France has now set some laws to ban the companies held responsible for the same. There are branches of USPRIG in origin Massachusetts, Maryland Washington and California who came in support of the agenda that there should be policies for the companies who will be held responsible for creating waste and pollution and this will be a step further for manifesting a circular economy in the fashion industry.
