PTEA signs agreement with ILO to promote decent working condition in textile and garment industry

Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) to promote decent work environment in the garment and textile industry in Faisalabad have signed an agreement with the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

The agreement includes a framework on improving industrial relations through training and compliance with international labour standards including occupational safety and health, wages, nature of employment, discrimination and other forms of mal-practices.

Francesco d’ Ovidio, country Director of ILO addressing the participants attending the agreement said that issues in the garment industry are systemic and require action that helps develop effective industrial relations and promote respect of international labour standards. He added that there is an “urgent need” to establish strategic and comprehensive public private collaborations.

Sohail Pasha, chairman PTEA said that international buyers are increasingly sensitive about ethical sourcing and international compliances. They are pleased in collaborating with ILO for improvement of working conditions and implementation of International Labour Standards in textile industries.

Sikandar Ismail Khan, Secretary Ministry of Overseas Pakistani and Human Resource Development (OPHRD) said that Pakistan’s GSP Plus is major opportunity for the country and that the ILO collaboration will help improve the image of Pakistan textile industries as responsible workplaces that are compliant with national laws, including those based on International Labour Standard.
