Pakistan’s cotton yarn import from India up by 94% YoY

In December 2015, cotton yarn export was at 98.8 million kgs with 76 countries importing yarn worth US$266 million (INR1,760 crore) during the month. The average unit price realization was unchanged from November 2015, however, it was down US cents 26 as compared to December 2014.

China was the largest importer of cotton yarn from India in December, followed by Bangladesh and Pakistan. The top three together accounted for more than 57 per cent of cotton yarn exported from India during the month.

Pakistan’s cotton yarn import from India surged 93.8 per cent YoY in terms of volume and up 60.7 per cent in terms of value in December. In Pakistan, the yarn production was down due to energy shortages and margins slid in December over significantly higher cotton prices. The Pakistani spinners were trapped between high cotton prices at home and competition for lower-priced Indian yarns taking advantage of a weaker rupee.

Portugal, Turkey, Thailand, Belgium and South Africa were among the fastest growing markets for cotton yarn, and accounted for 7.1 per cent of total cotton yarn export value. Nine new destinations were added for cotton yarn export, of which, Singapore, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Mozambique and Estonia were the major ones.

Nine countries did not import any cotton yarn from India, including Chile, Panama, El Salvador, Syria and Mexico. They had imported yarns worth US$0.73 million in December 2014. In December 2015, significant deceleration was seen in export to Slovenia, Brazil, Cambodia, Lebanon, Serbia and Montenegro.

Combed cotton yarn accounted for 65 per cent of cotton yarn exported in December with volumes at 58.5 million kgs worth US$173.3 million. Carded yarn export was at 31.7 million kg.
