Pakistan raising alarm over dumping of yarn by India

Pakistan textile sector has started raising alarm over yarn being dumped from India. A member of textile sector has expressed his concerns to Secretary Textile Rukhsana Shah regarding the dumping of yarn by the Indians.

Dr Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, former advisor to the Prime Minister on textile, urged the government to impose countervailing duty on the import of yarn from India.

He said this during a meeting with Secretary Textile Rukhsana Shah, said a press statement. It said India is allowed duty free export of yarn to Pakistan. In addition, Indian government has also given rebate to yarn exporters, who are dumping their fine count yarn in Pakistan market, seriously affecting local yarn manufactures.

Already industry sources have complained that the ‘subsidized’ Indian cotton, synthetic yarns and synthetic fabrics are already being ‘dumped’ in Pakistani market. Textiles worth several hundred million dollars are being brought into Pakistan via third countries, a synthetic yarn producer said.

Dr Baig also discussed the issue with Gohar Ejaz and Yasin Siddik of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association, who took up this matter with the commerce ministry. He said that the government would likely impose countervailing duty on import of yarn from India to protect local industries.
