OrthoLite®, the global supplier of sustainable, performance and comfort insoles and footwear materials solutions, has announced an exclusive partnership with Novamont, the international innovator in the development, production, and eco-design of biodegradable and compostable bioplastics and biochemicals in order to create OrthoLite Cirql™, the first circular foam material solution for footwear in the world.

OrthoLite Cirql foam, a patented footwear material, combines OrthoLite's 26 years of experience and innovation in foaming polymers with Novamont's globally renowned bio-based, compostable, and recyclable polymer to create the first technology capable of significantly reducing the high-impact of the manufacturing process with a variety of end-of-life disposal options.

A normal pair of running shoes emits 14 kg/30 pounds of carbon dioxide, which is equal to running a 100-watt light bulb for a week, according to a recent Life Cycle Assessment conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). More than 300 million pairs of shoes are discarded annually in the United States alone, with 95% of them ending up in landfills.

In 2023, OrthoLite Cirql will provide its 500+ footwear brand partners and factory stakeholders with conventional, plastic-free, scaleable, and fully circular material.

Scalable end-of-life management will require working with footwear brands and the waste management industry in conjunction with existing and future closed loop, take back, recycling streams for footwear.
