Oerlikon Barmag and Evonik have announced a strategic partnership to advance chemical recycling technologies for Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) waste. The collaboration focuses on developing robust and efficient processes for depolymerization and purification, combined with an integrated approach to repolymerization and associated EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) business models.
The joint chemical recycling technology is expected to be fully commercialized by the end of this decade. The initiative includes engaging other stakeholders across the value chain, such as feedstock suppliers, technology developers, and producers, while establishing a global partner network to support its growth.
Georg Stausberg, CEO of Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Solutions, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, “With Evonik as a strong and experienced partner in specialty chemicals, we aim to secure a significant market position as a comprehensive solution provider in the growing PET chemical recycling sector, driving sustainability advancements in the plastics industry.”
Max Preisenberger, Head of Catalysts at Evonik, highlighted the transformative potential of their collaboration. “Our innovative catalytic and chemical technologies complement existing mechanical recycling methods, enabling the processing of heavily contaminated and mixed PET waste that would otherwise be landfilled or incinerated. This partnership actively supports a sustainable circular economy,” he said.
Lukas Adamek, Head of Strategy & Business Development at Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Solutions, emphasized the unique strengths of the collaboration. “By combining the complementary expertise of both companies with Oerlikon Barmag’s PET processing and market access, we aim to create a circular economy for all types of PET waste. Our scalable technology will empower global PET producers and processors to enhance sustainability and contribute significantly to a circular economy,” he explained.
