Nanollose Limited successfully completes denim production with Orta

Nanollose Limited a leading biomaterials company, focused on commercializing scalable technology to create fibers and fabrics with minimal environmental impact, is pleased to announce that its manufacturing partner Orta has successfully manufactured sample yardage of high-quality denim fabric containing the Company’s Nullarbor-20™ fiber.

ORTA is a world pioneer in the creation, production, and distribution of sustainable denim. The company is headquartered in Turkey and can produce 40 million meters of denim annually. Um.

Leading denim brands Levi’s, Lee, Wrangler, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and luxury retailers Armani, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, and Isabel Marant all purchase denim from ORTA. Retailers GAP, H&M, and COS also purchase denim from ORTA. ORTA, a leader in sustainability with more than 1,500 workers, seeks to build a more resilient denim ecosystem where design meets technology and ethics.

The denim fabrics used by ORTA had 12% Nullarbor-20 fiber added to them; from these textiles, test pairs of jeans were created (see image right). The 260kg batch of Nullarbor-20 staple fiber produced by Birla Cellulose at their pilot plants earlier this year included the 50kg utilized to make the denim.

A collaboration agreement between Nanollose and ORTA, aimed at creating and producing denim textiles integrating NullarborTM TreeFree and Forest-Friendly fibers, led to the completion of the denim production (refer ASX announcement: 19 April 2022).

Both Nanollose and ORTA are looking to investigate other options for partnership with increasing volume and will provide more updates as they become available.

Dr. Wayne Best, Executive Chairman of Nanollose, said that the results of this initial batch of fabric from ORTA demonstrate the significant potential of Nullarbor-20 fiber and its adaptability for application in a variety of fabrics and apparel.

Best added that having a partner of the caliber of ORTA make denim using their fiber gives them hope for the future of their product. They continue to get excellent feedback and a lot of interest from their partner organizations using Nullarbor-20, and they look forward to more joint efforts that could lessen the environmental effect of the fashion industry.

Dr. Sedef Uncu Aki, who leads ORTA’s Sales & Marketing, PD, R&D, Planning and Operations said that sustainability at ORTA is “business as usual”. Their goal is to build a stronger denim ecosystem where ART (DESIGN) MEETS TECHNOLOGY MEETS ETHICS for new, limitless denim possibilities today and tomorrow. ORTA engages with artists, designers, and other creatives to produce denim that integrates current fashion trends. New ORTA fabrics are released each season along with trend presentations, capsule collections, and seasonal diaries that represent the ever-changing denim industry. Additionally, they are eager to incorporate Nullarbor into their line because they are attempting to merge fresh outsource developments in their own products.
