Milliken & Company, a leading textile manufacturer based in Spartanburg, South Carolina, has become the first in the industry to offer firefighter turnout gear where all three layers, the outer shell, thermal liner, and moisture barrier, are made from non-PFAS materials.
By sourcing all three layers from a single supplier, garment manufacturers can test the fabrics as a complete system, ensuring quality control and faster delivery of gear to firefighters.
“These fabrics exceed performance standards, proving that firefighters don’t have to sacrifice health, protection, or comfort when selecting turnout gear,” said Marcio Manique, Senior Vice President of Protective Fabrics at Milliken.
The newly issued NFPA 1970-2025 standard was introduced with lower performance expectations, anticipating that non-PFAS products might not match traditional materials. However, Milliken’s composite fabrics have surpassed even the stricter NFPA 1971-2018 standards in third-party testing, proving their exceptional protection and durability.
