Michelman has expanded its Unyte portfolio of water-based, PFAS-free surface modifiers designed for technical textiles. The Unyte solutions enhance the performance of both woven and nonwoven materials, offering properties such as water repellency, adhesion, lubricity, thermal stability, and oil repellency across a variety of fiber substrates.
The Unyte products are widely used in applications including ballistics, healthcare, appliances, roof underlayment, geotextiles, and unbonded glass insulation. Each of these applications demands specific performance requirements like Durable Water Repellency (DWR), chemical and oil repellency, adhesion resistance, processability, and thermal stability.
Lauren Hickey, Michelman’s Senior Global Marketing Manager for Fibers & Composites, noted that previous products containing PFAS were often over-engineered. "The EPA's recent focus on limiting PFAS impacts has driven the need for PFAS-free alternatives. With nearly 15,000 chemicals falling within the PFAS category, it's crucial to identify key performance needs and select suitable PFAS-free solutions. The Unyte® portfolio does not contain any substances of concern (SoCs), helping brands reduce environmental risk."
Hickey highlighted that global regulations on PFAS differ across countries and states, with varying enforcement dates and heavy penalties for noncompliance. Additionally, several fluoropolymer manufacturers have committed to leaving the market, underscoring the need for compliant alternatives.
