Lycra x Qore
The LYCRA Company has joined forces with Qore, a collaboration between Cargill and HELM, to make the world’s first large-scale bio-derived elastane. LYCRA introduced bio-derived elastane in 2014, and now, this patented solution will be widely available in early 2025.
A crucial element in LYCRA fiber is BDO (1,4-butanediol), typically sourced from fossil fuels. QIRA is a new type of BDO produced from corn grown annually in Iowa, USA. QIRA aims to decrease LYCRA fiber’s environmental impact and reliance on fossil fuels while maintaining quality and functionality.
A recent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted by Ramboll revealed that Bio-derived LYCRA fiber made with QIRA could cut carbon emissions by up to 44% compared to traditional LYCRA fiber. This innovation will help LYCRA Company’s customers, such as mills, brands, and retailers, shrink their product footprints while ensuring the same comfort and fit.
Bio-derived LYCRA fiber made with QIRA can be blended with existing fibers to create various garments, including wovens, circular knits, warp knits, hosiery, and seamless garments. Brands and retailers won’t need to alter fabrics, patterns, or processes, as bio-derived LYCRA fiber offers equivalent performance.
