The Assam State Textile and Handloom Industry Department in collaboration with Sivasagar district administration has selected Ligiribari village under Desangmukh Gaon Panchayat of Sivasagar Development Block, to make a remote village of the district as an ideal handloom industrial hub, the Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner N. Konwar revealed this during an interaction session held on Saturday.
The State Textile and Handloom Department has granted a sum of Rs 1.50 lakh to each of the registered weavers of the Ligiribari village, to make this village an ideal home for handloom and textile industry.
About 200 women weavers have been registered, the weavers will weave clothes that will reflect their traditional culture, said the Deputy Commissioner. The project will start from 2018 but primary training and exercises are going on.
The Sivasagar administration has already built a community workshop in Ligiribari village near the Bazar Tiniali, Desangmukh.
