The Lenzing Group, a provider of regenerated cellulose for textiles and nonwovens, has unveiled a unique concept aimed at safeguarding glaciers sustainably. Titled "Glacial Threads: From Forests to Future Textiles," the presentation was held during the International Day of Forests celebrations at the United Nations Office in Geneva.

Global warming is significantly impacting glacier melt, prompting the need for solutions to protect these vital natural formations. Geotextiles are commonly used for this purpose, but traditional ones are made from fossil-based fibers, contributing to microplastic pollution. Lenzing proposes using nonwovens made from biodegradable and recyclable LENZING™ fibers as a sustainable alternative.

The effectiveness of the new material was demonstrated during a field test on the Stubai Glacier, where it helped preserve four meters of ice from melting. This successful pilot project, conducted in collaboration with the University of Innsbruck and Austrian glacier operators, was extended to all tourist-used glaciers in Austria in 2023. Berndt Köll from Lenzing sees this initiative as a sustainable solution for glacier protection, both nationally and internationally.
