Garment workers in Leicester, UK, recently participated in a successful rally, urging fashion brands to support the UK’s garment manufacturing industry during the cost of living crisis. The workers pointed out that fashion brands are asking for price reductions even for clothing orders that have already been made and delivered, making it hard for businesses to sustain themselves. This has resulted in reduced working hours and factory closures, adding to the strain caused by the rising cost of living.
Labour Behind the Label’s Alena Ivanova highlighted the need for secure jobs, good conditions, and a commitment from brands to place orders with local suppliers in Leicester, ensuring decent wages and acceptable labor standards.
Workers emphasized a desire for improved working conditions, adherence to rules and regulations, and fair pay. They stressed the importance of keeping factories open and busy for the thousands of workers dependent on them.
Dominique Muller, from Labour Behind the Label, emphasized the responsibility of UK fashion brands to address the challenges faced by garment workers in Leicester. She urged brands to commit to ethical sourcing strategies, including assessing and improving working conditions in their supply chains.
Leicester’s garment factories had faced scrutiny during the pandemic for poor working conditions and non-payment of workers. The workers deserve fair treatment and support from the brands they have contributed to for years.
