Large scale plantation of mulberry starts under NERTP scheme in Thoubal district

Large scale plantation of mulberry under North Eastern Region Textile Promotion Scheme (NERTPS) 2014-15 in different parts of Thoubal district has been started from today with the objective of producing adequate silk in the state.

The plantation of mulberry was started at Ningtham Sericulture Farm set up at Ningtham Ingkhol, Tekcham Maning Ching. The farm belongs to Laishram Subhashchandra who is amongst the 200 beneficiaries of Thoubal district selected under NERTPS 2014-15.

In-charge of District Sericulture Office Thoubal Wangjing Tentha Circle L Bimola Devi; Firm Officer Y Deben and staff of the office Kh Boby Singh took part in the plantation of mulberry at the farm.

L Bimola Devi said that about 50, 000 saplings of mulberry were distributed to the 200 beneficiaries under the scheme yesterday to be planted in different parts of the district from today. Each of the beneficiaries is distributed with 3500 saplings of mulberry.

As the In-charge of Wangjing Tentha Circle, she along with the staff of the office is ensuring that the plantation drive is conducted widely and successfully. Arrangement has been made to distribute the saplings to those who are yet to get it.

Also Sericulture Farmers`â„¢ Development Union (SEFDU) Thoubal District has been formed with the aim to make Thoubal district as a Sericulture Model Village.

L Subhaschandra observed that adequate production of silk could contribute to economy of the state as it has immense potential in sericulture and horticulture.
