Biotech company Kraig Biocraft has unveiled its debut premium yarn, combining its recombinant spider silk with Pima Cotton, aiming to capture added value in the textile and garment markets. The yarn, a composite of the finest grade cotton and spider silk, is crafted to offer a 100% natural fiber option for textiles and finished garments.
In collaboration with textile consultant Jeff Dorton, Kraig Biocraft explored various spinning options before selecting a partner. The chosen spinner's technological expertise and production capacity were pivotal factors in the decision-making process.
CEO and founder Kim Thompson expressed enthusiasm, stating, "This marks the beginning of a series of innovative materials incorporating our revolutionary spider silk." The company's initial blend of cotton and spider silk targets upscale dresswear and apparel markets, with plans to develop additional blends for various formal wear subsegments.
In a bid to enhance sericulture practices in Vietnam, Kraig Biocraft's new facility will not only bolster production capabilities but also serve as a collaborative hub with the Vietnam Sericulture Association (VSA) and the Lam Dong Agro-Forestry Research and Experiment Centre (LAREC).
