Jaipur Living, a metro Atlanta company that sells hand-made Indian rugs and other home décor, will break ground on its new facility outside of Atlanta in nearby Acworth next week. The company, which currently employs 89 people in Norcross, plans to spend $14 million building a new 180,000 square-foot headquarters and warehouse in Cherokee County by May 2017.
A second-phase expansion, expected to cost $8 million, will add another 170,000 square feet. It is slated to be completed by 2020, bringing about 30 to 45 more jobs, the company said.
Cherokee County provided $500,000 in property tax incentives over 10 years and a waiver of $70,000 in impact fees, the company said.
Jaipur Living said that its average annual wage in its largest departments, customer service, administration and warehouse operations is about $57,000.
The company has simply outgrown their existing facilities, said CEO Asha Chaudhary.
The move marks something of a milestone for Chaudhary, who took over the family business from her father and built it into a major supplier of hand-crafted textiles to Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Restoration Hardware and other national retailers. The company has grown from $2.8 million in revenue a decade ago to $37 million last year.
The company announced the acquisition of a 23-acre parcel of land for the new headquarters in Acworth in February when it changed its identity from Jaipur Rugs Co., to Jaipur Living – a reflection of its evolution to a lifestyle brand.
While about 70 percent of its products are hand-made by a network of about 50,000 artisans in India, the company said that it also markets machine-manufactured rugs, pillows and other items from the United States, Turkey, Belgium and China.
Jaipur Living’s new location will be about a hour’s drive from its current headquarters and warehouse in Norcross, which has been sold.
Chaudhary said that she hopes to keep the company’s workforce intact, and expects at least 60 percent to make the move.
Their existing team has been truly integral to the growth and aim is to transition every one of the team members who are able to make this move with them.
In addition to its own branded rugs, pillows, poufs and throws, Jaipur Living carries licenses from Kate Spade New York, National Geographic, Nikki Chu, Jennifer Adams and more.
