Inditex, the parent company of Zara, has announced the acceleration of a variety of environmental goals, including acceleration of a new objective of achieving net-zero emissions by a decade, to 2040.
In addition, the fast-fashion giant wants all of the cotton it uses to be more sustainable or recycled by 2023, two years ahead of schedule, and all energy in its direct operations to come from renewable sources by 2022, versus an 80% target in 2025.
Bershka, Massimo Dutti, and Pull & Bear are among the group’s brands. The company also set a new goal to reduce water usage by 25% throughout its whole supply chain by 2025.
By next year, it aims to put the Join Life label on half of its clothes, indicating that the products have been manufactured from recycled or sustainably produced materials. Last year, the label was found on 35% of Inditex’s products.
The business also reaffirmed previously stated goals, stating that “by 2023, all clothing made of cellulosic fibers will be 100% sustainable, and by 2025, all polyester and linen will be 100% recycled or sustainable, in accordance with the company’s established standards.”
At the company’s annual general meeting, executive chairman Pablo Isla announced the news, along with the introduction of a number of other sustainability initiatives that would be brought forward.
