The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has announced a new agreement with the Uzbek government to develop a Country Programme for Uzbekistan, aiming to enhance labour conditions and promote social justice. The programme, scheduled to run from 2026 to 2030, will support the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions, emphasizing the shared commitment of both parties.

At a high-level meeting, the ILO director-general praised Uzbekistan's progress in labour rights and reaffirmed support for ongoing reforms. The director-general highlighted the significant improvements in working conditions within the country's textile and garment industry, a result of a landmark agreement with the ILO’s Better Work programme and the Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan (FTUU).

“In 2013, Uzbekistan agreed to cooperate with the ILO to eliminate forced labour and child labour during the cotton harvest. Today, for the ILO and for other countries, Uzbekistan has become a role model. We stand ready to continue to support you in implementing your ambitious reforms,” stated director-general Gilbert F. Houngbo during a conference on advancing social justice.

Houngbo also announced a new collaboration between the ILO, Uzbek constituents, and the Government of Germany to reform labour inspection services. Additionally, he congratulated Uzbekistan on its election to the ILO Governing Body, marking a first in the country's history.
