The winner of the first Imagining Sustainable Fashion Award, which was revealed on Tuesday during a webinar hosted by Giusy Bettoni, CEO of C.L.A.S.S., and Anna Detheridge, President of Connecting Cultures, and launched last October by non-profit research organization Connecting Cultures and international ecohub C.L.A.S.S. Lucy Orta, Chair of Art and the Environment at the University of the Arts London, and Dio Kurazawa, founding member of The Bear Scouts, also attended it.
The competition, which received over 100 submissions from all over the world, was searching for new ways to express sustainable values, and it attracted entries from photographers, writers, designers, and multimedia creatives working in fields as diverse as magazine layout, dance, theatre, comic strip, and design.
Detheridge said that the choice was very difficult. It wasn’t that everyone converged on one. There were a lot of fresh ideas.
Emma Scalcon, 22, from Padua, Italy, received the 3000 euro award. She is a second-year student at the IAAD ( Istituto d’Arte Applicata e Design) studying Textile and Fashion Design. Scalcon’s “Take a Walk on the Green Side” campaign was characterized by Detheridge as “well-focused and versatile,” with “easy and informative language intended to appeal to younger consumers,” while Orta praised Scalcon for “simplifying very complicated details, researching and condensing them into wonderful illustrations in a very personal style.” Orta also praised Scalcon’s campaign for “guiding the consumer without being moralistic.” It had a good aesthetic and was bold, playful, and bold.”
Bettoni said that what struck him most about Emma Scalcon’s project is her use of the picture of an eye, a central feature that can be used in a variety of ways, to see and examine the endless new possibilities and doors that responsible creativity enables us to open.
Other judges this inaugural year included Sara Kozlowski, Director of Education and Sustainable Strategies; Paola Arosio, head of New Brands & Sustainability Projects, Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (The National Chamber for Italian Fashion); Council of Fashion Designers of America; Renata Molho, journalist, former editor-in-chief of L’Uomo Vogue and editor-at-large of L’Uomo Vogue, Vogue Italia; Rita Airaghi, Director, Gianfranco Ferré Foundation; and Stefania Ricci, Director, Museo Salvatore Ferragamo.
