Grupo Impetus launches eco-friendly fabrics

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-07-11 15:42:49 – Portugal

Grupo Impetus, headquartered in Barqueiros, Portugal, is introducing a new line of fabrics made from OceanSafe’s naNea next-gen biodegradable polyester, dyed with Colorifix's entirely biological dyeing process. This collaboration was unveiled at Berlin Fashion Week from July 1-4.

The new Impetus fabrics are free of harmful substances and made entirely from biodegradable materials. They do not shed microplastics while being fully recyclable. OceanSafe's naNea, based in Berne, Switzerland, serves as a sustainable replacement for conventional PET, biodegrading over 93% in marine environments within 99 days. It is the world’s first synthetic fiber with Cradle to Cradle Gold certification.

Colorifix, based in Norwich, UK, uses DNA codes for natural colors to create dyes. This process, which involves teaching microbes to produce pigments via fermentation, significantly reduces chemical pollution by 80% and conserves water during fabric dyeing. The innovative method begins by identifying natural colors from organisms and translating their DNA codes into engineered microorganisms for natural dye production.
