The decision in India to enable garment manufacturers to export non-surgical masks around the world was heralded by native stakeholders, which endeavors revenue rise by up to US$1 billion within the upcoming few decades as face masks become a new standard in society.

The Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) says it has actively pressured textile and commerce ministries over recent months to permit mask exports and believes the decision will offer vital reinforcement into the nation's economy at a time of uncertainty.

TEA president, Raja M Shanmugham, stated, "We are pleased to have been permitted to export the non-surgical and non-medical masks, which came in a time when the garment industry is under strain with the exports because of COVID-19 around the world."

We've been getting enquiries for masks for a while now but couldn't do so since the government banned the export of such masks till Saturday. The choice to allow [exports] not only brought immense prospects into the textile industry but also helps create additional revenue for its 1,500-odd export components," he continued.

As much of India's garment manufacturing business has struggled to stay afloat throughout the pandemic, it's expected by enabling companies to mass-produce non-surgical masks that they can remain competitive by being versatile.

With nations easing out of the lockdown-mode,  governments world over have put out conditional terms for a return to normal life. Amongst these terms, many rely upon the use of face masks for men and women in close quarters, as to control the rate of disease and mitigate a fresh spike in cases.

Nevertheless, it's hoped India can capitalize on what will undoubtedly be a surge in demand for masks of the sort, especially across the western world. Shanmugham says, "Interestingly, the majority of the buyers are expected to source masks in design and fabrics to suit that of readymade garments. It is likely to be a colorful and a permanent export chance for Tirupur cluster, at least for the upcoming few years."

This capacity will bode well for India's established manufacturers of personal protective gear, which has so far concentrated on domestic trade. Together with the capacity to liaise with potential customers The world over, it's believed India could reap great gains from a globally for masks and PPE.
