The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), managed by the non-profit organization Global Standard, has joined the Make the Label Count coalition. This collaboration aims to ensure that textile sustainability claims in the EU are transparent and credible.
Make the Label Count advocates for revising the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology for textiles to improve its accuracy in measuring environmental impact.
Marie-Luise Pörtner, Global Standard’s global regulations specialist, emphasized the importance of trustworthy sustainability claims. "With over 16,000 certified facilities, GOTS demonstrates that businesses want to validate their sustainability efforts, and consumers seek reliable eco-friendly textiles. Our label is backed by strict ecological and human rights criteria, along with independent third-party certification," she said.
Launched in 2021, the Make the Label Count campaign focuses on improving the PEF methodology for textiles. The PEF framework is designed to measure a product’s environmental footprint and provide clear information to consumers.
