Glatfelter Corporation launches nonwoven battery separator

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-10-09 18:12:20 – USA

Glatfelter Corporation has unveiled its new OmniSep nonwoven battery separator, following extensive research and development aimed at improving electrical energy storage technology. OmniSep is designed to meet the increasing demand for a battery separator that supports high charge and discharge rates (up to 16C pulse discharge), enhances safety, and can be customized to suit different battery chemistries. It is also fully manufactured in the United States.

The OmniSep production platform allows the separator to be tailored to specific applications, providing high porosity for increased ionic conductivity and fast charging. Its pore size can be reduced to extend shelf life, and various polymers can be used to meet specific temperature and safety requirements. Standard grades of 15 and 22µm are thermally stable up to 150°C, with developmental grades stable up to 200°C, eliminating the need for ceramic coatings.

OmniSep’s advanced fiber design enhances hydrophilicity, allowing for fast wet-out and filling, lower ionic resistance, and compatibility with aqueous systems. This versatility has already attracted the attention of several battery manufacturers, particularly those supplying ‘extreme’ batteries.
