GCNYC announces a sustainable fashion master’s degree

The Glasgow Caledonian New York College has announced the introduction of a new Master of Science in Sustainable Fashion education program. The new program aims to provide a fresh vision needed to steer the fashion industry towards a stable, prosperous future in line with the planet’s needs.

The college stated that it will develop a research-based curriculum that will equip students with the skills essential to acquire top-level positions within the fashion industry.

Tommaso Rulli, the founder and CEO of MTI which is a textile sourcing platform, stated the now the fashion industry needed a leadership program focused on sustainability. He also added that he was honored to be part of this initiative that connected students with industry professionals.

The new Master’s program has replaced the College’s M.S. in International Fashion Marketing. The college believes it needs to shift focus on education about fashion’s impact on people and the planet.

The college stated that the program has been designed to teach participants to ‘learn the benefits of operating a business under a new paradigm’, from the supply chain to marketing messaging. The college added that they were transitioning the former singular profit for shareholder’s goal to the need to serve a wide range of stakeholders.

The students enrolling into the program will be asked to submit a thesis that addresses the challenges faced by the planet due to the impacts of the fashion industry. They will be encouraged to partner with companies and organizations facilitated by GCNYC’s new Center for Social Impact and Innovation in order to develop a healthy approach that challenges the status quo.

The Vice President of GCNYC’s, Dr. Jacqueline LeBlanc stated that the program will produce leaders that the fashion industry requires, who will drastically rethink the future of an industry that been evolving to support sustainable practices
