Fashion for Good and The Microfibre Consortium (TMC) have announced the launch of 'Behind the Break: Exploring Fibre Fragmentation,' a groundbreaking study aimed at identifying key drivers of fibre fragmentation. The research will challenge root causes and assumptions, address data gaps, and validate test methods to mitigate fibre fragment pollution at its source.

The project brings together major fashion brands and manufacturers with Under Armour joining as a project partner. Testing will be conducted across three laboratories: Paradise Textiles, Under Armour, and IMPACT+ Network from Northumbria University, focusing on cotton knit, cotton woven, and polyester knit fabrics.

“Partnering with Fashion for Good has helped unite project partners behind the need for alignment on closing fibre fragmentation knowledge gaps. With this support, we can build on existing research and take significant steps towards science-led, integrated mitigation actions,” said Kelly Sheridan, CEO at The Microfibre Consortium.

Lewis Shuler, Head of Innovation at Alpine Group/Paradise Textiles, highlighted the role of collective insights: “Addressing challenges like fibre fragmentation is key to shaping the future of fashion. Our goal is to validate theories on root causes and develop strategies for mitigating fibre pollution through informed textile design and manufacturing.”

By combining research, testing, and collaboration, 'Behind the Break' represents a critical step toward a science-led approach in tackling fibre fragmentation, ensuring a more sustainable and responsible fashion industry.
